IT MAY have been about 100 miles away from where they were going on but Stalybridge schoolchildren did their bit to mark the Commonwealth Games.
Pupils from Buckton Vale Primary School in Carrbrook passed on the Queen’s Baton to those at Millbrook Primary, who then handed it over to Copley Academy.
The baton relay toured through a number of Commonwealth countries over the last few months, including Singapore, Mauritius, and Canada, before ending up in host city Birmingham.
And it passed through Tameside, with numerous schools taking part in different stages to make sure it reached its destination on time.
The baton, which contained a message from the Queen that was read out at the Games’ opening ceremony on Thursday, July 28 – just after The Correspondent went to press – first came to London for five days in June as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
It then jetted off to the Falkland Islands and also toured the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, before it was passed through Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales and returning back to England.
The Commonwealth Games, which featured 19 different sports, ended on August 8.
