BIRTHDAYS can be tiring affairs – but 100-year-old Roy Self was determined to savour his big day.
Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Janet Cooper, went to Moss Cottage Nursing Home on Manchester Road in Ashton to join the celebrations.
Roy was joined by two nieces, Kathleen Kirkham and Christine Webb, as well as her husband David, to mark the big day on Thursday, May 19.
Staff at Moss Cottage put up a display of their own to make sure such an occasion did not pass by without being marked.
And Kelly Tracey from Bring Me Sunshine provided the entertainment by singing some familiar huts for Roy and his fellow residents.
Roy was brought up on Pelham Street in Ashton, not far from Moss Cottage, and worked at the Snipe Pit, which is now the nearby retail park.
In later life he worked as an engineer at Joseph Adamson’s until he retired.
He was married to his beloved wife Elsie for an amazing 70 years before she sadly passed away in 2014.
Roy was in good spirits as he soaked up the greetings and warmth from residents and staff, including administrator Jo-Ann Chandler, who reached her own half century a day later.
And he marked the day with a drink of his favourite Guinness while Cllr Cooper also handed over gifts.
