A STALYBRIDGE block of flats is to change appearance after Tameside Council approved plans to add new, safe cladding.
Thompson Court, a 12-storey structure, dominates the skyline around the top of Rassbottom Street and overlooks both the fire station and train station.
But after a scheme put forward by Jigsaw Homes was given the go ahead, its appearance will alter.

The existing facade will be replaced and the title Thompson Court will stretch down its structure. All windows will also be replaced and updated.
A report for Jigsaw states: “The proposed works are intended to enhance the existing apartments for residents by improving energy efficiency, fixing maintenance issues, and generally improving the outward appearance of the building for the benefit of residents.
“The general scope of work is for the installation of a new insulated render system together with an external wall insulated cladding system.
“The windows will be upgraded with the replacement of the existing UPVC windows with more efficient UPVC and aluminium windows
“The existing ‘Thompson Court’ lettering will be replaced with a new larger scale lettering which goes down the eastern elevation side where it will be visible from the street scene, Rassbottom Street and surrounding areas.”

Tameside Council sought reports from many agencies over the work but its own officers decided:
“Although of a large scale, it would not be perceived to be overly dominant (visually) on the 12-storey building and would not be of detriment to its overall design/appearance.
“The letters would be painted on and not protrude forward of the elevation or be illuminated.”
