A CARRBROOK-BASED fashion designer has scored another major honour after being named one of the 30 people to watch in her field by a prestigious magazine.
Chanel Elkayem hit the headlines when one of her creations dazzled on the red carpet of the BRIT Awards when it was worn by celebrity Zara McDermott.
Now she is making waves again after Forbes Magazine named her as one of the 30 Under 30 tipped for huge things.
Chanel was given the testimony: “United Kingdom-born and raised, luxury womenswear and accessories designer Chanel Joan Elkayam showed her collections at all four major fashion weeks before turning 20.
“With 139,000 Instagram followers, she aims to make “empowering” clothing for people of all genders.”
Now she hopes that recommendation can propel her business, which is still based in Stalybridge, to bigger and better things.
And her famous client base has grown after actress Alex Kingston, who has appeared in films and TV for more than 40 years, requested one of her gowns.
“I was absolutely delighted to have been selected as one of the Forbes 30 under 30,” said the 24-year-old, who started designing at the age of 16. “What a true honour!”
“Since Zara’s dress got publicity, there has been more orders. I’ve also had a lot of Bridal orders now since Covid-19 restrictions were completely lifted.
“And quite a few famous people have called me. Alex Kingston ordered a dress from me for a charity gala.
“It was wonderful designing and making her outfit. It was an honour to meet her.
“And I’ve had interest globally.”
Chanel, who operates under the CJE brand, is used to seeing her work capture people’s imagination around the world.
After having work and collections showcased in each of the big four fashion weeks – Paris, Milan, London and New York – she has been published in the global press and media and followed by global clients.
But this Forbes honour is a platform to grow across the Atlantic as she gets back on her feet after the Covid-19 lockdowns.Chanel added: “Absolutely it can, I’m looking forward to what’s to come. A lot is lined up.
“Something very exciting and special is happening in July. Keep your eyes peeled!
“Before Covid-19, my business was truly reaching new heights and then unfortunately we entered lockdown.
“I feel like I’m picking up now where I left off pre-Covid. It feels great to be back on track again and I strongly believe in manifesting.
“It’s all about self-love, self-empowerment and celebrating what I’ve achieved and will achieve.
“Believe you can and you will.”
