Tennis club to go up in lights

A BOWLING and tennis club will make more of an impression after being given permission to get some long-awaited changing rooms and install floodlights.

And it is hoped the scheme at Ashton will encourage more people to take up sport.

The facility, on Rayner Lane, applied to Tameside Council to build a single-storey pavilion and club house and put in four lights.

Now it has been given the go ahead, it is hoped to prove a benefit to both the community’s sporting aspirations and local businesses.

Documents for the application state: “The proposal would benefit the local environment and will provide a sustainable use for this sporting complex in Tameside.

“Whilst encouraging the take up of more sport to a wider cross section of the community.

“The existing premises have not had changing rooms and a club house for more than five years These works would be controlled under building regulations.

“The current premises due to an overdue upgrade and will be suited modern needs. The applicant intends to use local labour/contractors to undertake the works generating wealth and sustaining local employment.”

Ashton Bowling and Tennis Club, located to the west of Rayner Lane and north of Lord Sheldon Way, has a bowling green with associated floodlights, parking and small scale buildings/shelters.
But this scheme will see facilities modernised and improved.

The existing use at the site would be maintained, with the new facilities effectively helping to support it.

And Tameside Council has granted permission in a notice from director of place, Ian Saxon.
