‘Allot’ on sale at allotments

ALLOTMENT owners have laid the groundwork for their big fundraising sale – literally.

Volunteers and committee members at Stalybridge’s Mottram Road Allotments Association are in the process of cultivating hundreds of plants so they can be ready for the event on May 14 and 15.

And all proceeds from the sale will help make sure the oasis of calm next to what is a very busy road can be maintained.

Somehow, more than 80 allotments are squeezed into the site but everyone has got together to make sure this year’s sale is as good as it can be.

“All proceeds go to the association and that goes towards the upkeep, which comes under our remit and not Tameside Council’s,” said Sandra Stones, of the MRAA.

“It’s mainly bedding and border plants. There are a few perennials and a few vegetables and we’ve made a pre-order form, so people can put their requests down.

“I know you can buy bedding plants earlier in the year but because of the changeable weather – as has been shown – a frost can kill them.

“When the temperature drops, they all have to be fenced up to make sure they’re all OK.“And the sale takes a lot of organising!”

Allotments are proving popular as Sandra recalled she was on the waiting list for about three-and-a-half years before getting hers.

And the annual sale provides vital funds that keep the Mottram Road allotments in good condition.

Gates open for the sale at 10.30am and the sale goes on until 3pm on both days.
