Dorothy shows no signs of stopping

A FUNDRAISING champion says she has no intention of stopping now she has reached 100 years old.

In fact, the celebration for Dorothy Dawson’s landmark saw the coffers of the Mossley Cancer Committee she helped found in 1971 swell.

People flew in from as far away as Australia just to see the woman who has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds, if not millions.

And sitting at Stamford Golf Club as dozens of friends, relatives and well-wishers – who all paid a donation to enter and were snapping up jams, bags, chocolates and cakes – said congratulations and thank you, Dorothy vowed to keep on going.

Speaking with the telegram from the Queen in front of her, she told The Correspondent: “I’m already looking to being 101.

“I am a very, very lucky lady.

“I couldn’t believe the turnout. People paid donations to get in and I already had about £1,400 at home.

“I can’t thank everyone enough. I’ve got some absolutely wonderful friends, young and old.

“Over the 51 years I’ve been with the Mossley Cancer Committee, we’ve raised in some years as much as £30,000 – £40,000 but during lockdown we couldn’t have any efforts.

“We’d have coffee mornings at Mossley Band Club but we managed to have virtual ones over the Internet.”

For her birthday on March 29, Dorothy received 10 bouquets of flowers but insisted she did not want anything.

But when asked what the secret is to her long life, she admitted: “I’ve no idea! As I keep telling everyone, it’s only a number.

“I’ll be no different tomorrow than I am today.”
