EARLIER this term, I felt compelled to do something to help the people of Ukraine and this resulted in a very successful bake sale that brought my whole school community closer together.
I was really confused and angry when I heard about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Our Collective Worship assemblies in school were all about peace, which helped me to come up with an idea – a bake sale to raise funds for those affected by the war.

I pitched the idea to the headteacher, Miss Trelfa, and then to the whole school during assembly time. On the walls around school, I hung homemade posters and did everything I could to get the word out and request the help of my peers; I urged them to grab a rolling pin and get baking!
On the day of the sale, I was blown away by the number of delicious treats that made their way in to school: delightfully decorated cupcakes and fairy cakes; lovingly glazed donuts; biscuits of every kind and heavenly slices of cake filled with the yummiest of flavours.
Knowing how generous Micklehurst can be, I had expected plenty of donations but the actual number of sweet treats that arrived was a phenomenal surprise to all – I’m so grateful to everyone that contributed.

Once our stall was ready to go and the sweet smell of cakes was filling our hall, we invited the children to purchase some goodies from a number of Year 6 volunteers, who were running the stall (there were so many goodies, I needed lots of help to sell them!).
There was a buzz of excitement throughout the day: the children were smiling and enjoying their sugary treats but it was also the thrill of knowing we were raising money for those in need.
We had so many cakes that we even had to extend the sale to after school and get our grown-ups involved – they were very happy to indulge in a treat too.
Miss Trelfa said: “I am extremely proud of Amelia and her determination to raise money for those in need. I was overwhelmed by the support shown by our families and community.”
Our grand total was a whopping £396.61. I was so happy that my little idea had become such a big success and the money was going to such a good and important cause.
