AN ORCHARD is springing up in Hattersley with 70 new fruit trees to celebrate the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
The challenge to plant the trees before Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee on June 6 has started, with the community and special guests gathering at Hattersley Community Gardens.
First up was the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Janet Cooper, followed by Wing Commander Roy Catterall, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Manchester.
Then up stepped the local MP Jonathan Reynolds for his tree, followed by Jean Byrnes from the Prince’s Trust with some young trainees from Groundwork.
The formal plantings were completed by Cllr Betty Affleck, assisted by her great niece Amelie.
Des Clare and his crew from the garden project presented the guests with a bowl of planted bulbs after a tour around the project.
The community is invited to get involved with the project. All are welcome to come along and plant one of the 70 fruit trees.
