A MOSSLEY church’s priest is leaving after its diocese told older members to retire.
Father Michael Lavin will exit St Joseph’s, on Argyle Street, as a result of the policy adopted by the Diocese of Salford.
And the popular figure, who has led the church for 11 years, announced his departure in his own style.

He said: “The diocese is implementing a recent policy that requires antediluvian (ancient) clergy (sort of diocesan Dad’s Army) to retire.
“M Lavin is one of seven high-mileage clergy who will be taking the plunge into retirement.
“In the bishop’s defence, he feels that long-serving clergy should be able, God willing, to enjoy a period of retirement before falling off the perch.
“A new priest will be coming to St Joseph’s, probably some time after Easter.
“So, no goodbyes for the present; just immense gratitude for everything, and to say, that on no account must the hat be passed round – the odd Hail Mary is much more welcome.”
Father Lavin moved to Mossley in 2011 after leaving Sacred Heart and St Anne RC churches in Blackburn, Lancashire following 15 years’ service.
As a result of the move, he will also be leaving the neighbouring St Joseph’s Presbytery and his position as a governor of nearby St Joseph’s Primary School.
The new policy has been introduced by the Bishop of Salford, John Arnold.
