WRITING on a Stalybridge building will be left on show after work done to prevent storm damage unveiled it.
Cladding was being taken off the structure on the corner of High Street and Bayley Street after strong winds started affecting the structure beneath it.
But as workmen removed plain corrugated steel panels, a glimpse of the past came into view.
For the words ‘GA Rayner & Sons fruit & potato merchants’ were found to span the length of the building.
Now after the discovery, it has been decided to leave it on view.
Further research into the name revealed it in fact referred to Gordon Rayner’s business, which occupied the site.
Gary Whittaker recalled: “I remember Rayner’s was a fruit and veg wholesalers.
“I used to sneak in when I was about five years old and borrow the odd apple. There was a little old fella sat in a little hut in the middle of the warehouse keeping watch.
“I only took one apple. It made me a bit sick because it was a baking apple!”
