Rugby club’s relegation a financial blow to Stalybridge

STALYBRIDGE Celtic have taken a financial hit following Oldham Rugby League Club’s relegation from the Betfred Championship.

The Roughyeds will no longer be playing home games at Bower Fold as their Vestacare Stadium in Oldham can accommodate Bretfred League 1 fixtures.

Rob Gorski, Celtic’s chairman and majority shareholder, admitted the football club has lost a five-figure sum in potential income from the deal, a blow to the club’s finances.

He said: “From the club’s point of view, the rugby club was a great contributor to our finances. We have lost a five-figure sum, money which will not be recouped.

“On a personal left knowing Chris (Hamilton, Roughyeds’ chairman) well, I am disappointed that despite all the time and effort he has put in, the team was relegated.

“I am hoping they have a successful season, win promotion and return here for the 2023 season.”

The Vestacare Stadium meets the standards for League 1 rugby but not for the Championship which is why they hire Bower Fold for matches.

Mr Gorski admitted the financial situation at Celtic remains challenging.

He explained: “There was a financial windfall for all non-league clubs who benefited from the Government’s generosity to the hospitality sector during lockdown.

“We are now back to normal and, like most clubs, it is a struggle.”
