Wooden spoon for losing captain

PRESIDENT Keith Walker earned the bragging rights over captain Mike Taylor in the annual team matchplay challenge at Stamford Golf Club.

It turned out to be a resounding 8.5-3.5 victory for the president, who handed over the wooden spoon to the vanquished captain.

The Winter League continues at Stamford with Leigh Williams winning the second week’s singles Stableford with 42 points on the card from Barry King.

Third place went to Peter Howarth (39) while fourth was James Woodcock (38) on the card from Jack Darnbrough.

After two events, Peter Howarth heads the standings. There will be 20 events held with the best seven scores to count.

DENTON’S Winter Leagues are also underway.

The opening singles Stableford provided an exciting finish as Joe Mulhearn (33pts) won on the card from second-placed Steven Dugdale and Mike Slater.

Habib Yousaf and Shahnawaz Gaugher won the first pairs’ event with 41 points on the card from runners-up Martin Shore and Steve Barlow. Third were Mike Rogers and John Bennett (39).

Week two’s singles Stableford was won by Robert Ashelby (34) from second-placed Trevor Taylor (32) on the card from Andrew Naismith.

The second pairs competition, a greensome medal, saw Lee Thompson and Alan Ashmore (47) triumph.

Runners-up were Paul Thackeray and Alan Dugdale (49) on the card from Neil Roberts and Doug McCallum.

After two rounds, the leader in the singles is Trevor Taylor (32) from nearest challengers Andrew Naismith (28), Joe Mulhearn (23) and Guy Hamer (22).

In the pairs’ competition, Dave Garner and Dean Murray head the standings with 32 points from Amir Nazir and David Sibanda (25), Habib Yousaf and Shahnawaz Gaugher (23), Paul Coulter and Len Walker (23).
