Craddock promoted as Mossley’s assistant manager stands down

ALEX Craddock has been appointed Mossley’s new assistant manager after Lee Ashworth stepped down.

The Holmfirth-based Craddock, 30, who has been on the Lilywhites’ coaching staff since David Fish became manager, stepped up to fill the vacancy.

It is the end of an era for Fish who has worked with Ashworth throughout his seven years in management as they teamed up initially at Rochdale Sacred Heart and subsequently were the management team at Chadderton and Mossley.

Ashworth reluctantly made the decision to step down as he has increased job commitments as he works towards becoming a headteacher and he also has a young son.

Fish said: “I had a conversation with Lee, and he felt he could not fully commit which I fully understood so it is right for him to make a clean break.

“It was very amicable and there has been no fallout. We went out for a meal on Friday and it important our friendship remains.”

Craddock, who has his UEFA B licence, was coaching at Shelley in the North West Counties League before his move to Mossley.

He played amateur football but decided to focus on coaching early after having a couple of serious knee injuries.

Fish said: “Alex is a great coach who is ambitious and wants to make a full-time living out of the game.

“He is young, hungry and talented and as well as coaching will take on the wider responsibilities of assistant manager. He is an excellent fit.”

Fish admitted it will be strange not having Ashworth, whose father-in-law is Oldham Athletic legend Les Chapman, by his side.

He explained: “It will be a big change. I spoke to Lee almost as much as my wife.

“When you analysed it, we were together between eight and 10 hours each week at training and matches.

“Most evenings we would speak or WhatsApp one another, and it was a really close relationship.

“Lee will not disappear into the hills and had offered to do some scoring if he is free. I am sure we will still see about the club.”
