Tameside boxers prove they are Elite as they claim five medals

YOUNGSTERS from Tameside Elite Boxing Academy claimed five medals at the Lonsdale MTK Global Box Cup.

And for Millbrook brothers Joe and Jacob Burns, aged 19 and 15, and Katie Clegg, 19, of Stalybridge, all struck gold.

Denton’s Tyler Byrne, 18, and Sydney Chambers, 15, from Ashton, came away from the four-day event at Penrith with silver medals.

Eleven members of the Stalybridge-based Tameside Elite Boxing Academy were among more than 800 boxers from all over Europe who attended what is one of the biggest amateur boxing events in the calendar.

Elite coach Steve Buckley said: “This was the first time we had competed in the event and to win five medals exceeded expectations.

“Nobody had boxed competitively for more than 18 months due to Covid so we didn’t know how they would do.

“In addition, we had boxers who had never fought before.”

Sydney was making her competitive debut for Elite in Penrith and Tyler had fought only once before taking part in the event.
