Knockout victories for Mark and Pat

MARK Alexander is crowned club champion at Denton Golf Club following a dramatic win in the Victory Cup, the singles matchplay knockout.

The 33-year-old, from Dane Bank, snatched his first-ever major victory from the jaws of defeat in the two-round event which was not determined until the first sudden death play-off hole.

In a closely contested final against Andy Gregory, the lead changed hands several times.

When Andy went two up with two holes to play, it looked game over for Mark, a HGV driver.

Mark won the 17th, 18th and 37th holes, the latter with an up and down from a bunker for a par while Andy posted a bogey.

“If you chose a way to win, that would be it, but you wouldn’t say that if you were involved in it,” he explained.

“I wasn’t nervous until the final green when I had the chance to win. There was massive emotion when I did it.”

Mark, whose handicap is 12, has enjoyed a successful season as he was a member of the double winning B team in the Oldham and District Golf League.

He has been a member at Denton for the last six years, turning to the sport after earlier playing football for Old Mancunians.

“I was unfit and went along for a game with my brother and loved it,” he said.

While Mark, who had a hole in one at the eighth hole last year, was claiming his first major victory, Pat Southall is a multiple winner of the Whittaker Bowl, the women’s matchplay title.

Pat, who plays off 28, defeated Sue Thompson 3 and 2 in the final.

“I was amazed to win because the lady I played was a very good player,” explained Pat, whose husband Ron is also a member at Denton.

Pat, 74, was a member at Brookdale as she lived close to the course at Woodhouses, but moved as she and Ron had friends who played at Denton.

She added that at one stage she thought she was destined not to win the Whittaker Bowl.

“I lost five finals before winning it for the first time in 2002, the year my granddaughter was born,” she explained.

Pat and her friend Wendy Pollitt have won the mixed foursomes matchplay six times and she has also won Lady Captain’s Prize several times.

In the other matchplay knockout finals, Dean Murray and Dave Garner won the Committee Cup, the men’s foursomes, after defeating Joe Mulhearn and Joe Mulhearn jnr in the final.

Linda Leung and Amir Nazir overcame Pam Wiseley and club president in the final.

The women’s foursomes final saw lady captain Norma Boott and Laraine Gordon defeat Angela Ellam and Pat Coleman.
