LOOK out in the future for Amy Starkey, a rising star in athletics who is seeking to emulate the achievements of champions heptathletes Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
The 15-year-old from Carrbook, who is an athletics all-rounder, is a member of a multi-event development group which is based at Manchester’s SportCity.
Amy recently finished third in the javelin at the Greater Manchester County Championships which were hosted by Trafford.
The Year 10 student at Mossley Hollins High School is ranked sixth in the North West at javelin with a personal best of 25.87m and in the top 24 in the North West at shot putt.
Amy, who competes for East Cheshire Harriers, caught the running bug off her uncle Andi Jones who was a well-known and successful marathon and fell runner.
Initially the former pupil at St Raphael’s Primary, Millbrook, enjoyed cross country and long-distance running before switching to concentrate on field events – she also excels at discus.
And to develop Amy’s multi-event expertise, she joined SportCity based Venture Athletics.
Coach Ian Halliday said: “Amy’s been with our Venture Athletics multi-event development group at SportCity for more than three years, since she was Under-13.
“She is a popular, well-liked member of the group who always gives of her best in training and competition. We’ve been particularly pleased with her progress during 2021, after all the Covid related difficulties encountered in preparing for the season.
“Her improvement in her throws has been especially good, increasing her shot, discus and javelin personal bests significantly and earning her a county champs bronze medal in the javelin.”
