Mossley rapist jailed

A MAN who raped and sexually assaulted a woman in Mossley has been jailed for eight years.

Ajmal Afuq, of Blackburn, was locked up after launching a series of sexual assaults that took place in the town between December 2019 and May 2020.

And police officers hope his victim’s bravery in coming forward has been rewarded with the sentence.

A temporary Crown Court in Stockport heard a trial of Afuq, 45, into one count of rape and two counts of sexual assault.

He was found guilty of all three offences and sentenced to eight years for rape, two-and-a-half years for sexual assault and 12 months for another sexual assault. He is to serve the three sentences concurrently.

After the sentencing, Detective Constable Philip Scargill of Greater Manchester Police’s CID division, said: “I’d like to commend the lady who bravely came forward and reported these appalling crimes.

“She has shown incredible bravery and co-operation throughout what must have been a very difficult investigation.

“I hope today’s sentence provides some form of closure and comfort knowing Afuq will be behind bars for the next eight years.”
