Canal springs leak in town centre

THE Huddersfield Narrow Canal seems to have sprung a leak in Stalybridge town centre.

It is affecting the Castle Street car park where pools of water and patches of dampness can be found, even in the driest weather.

The car park has been subject of complaints by residents and other uses in recent years because of its state of disrepair.

When heavy rain occurs, drivers find their vehicles marooned in the middle of a lake.

Resident Steve Walton, who parks his vehicle on the car park, claimed the leak had been reported to the Canal & River Trust more than two months ago.

“The canal has developed a leak which has left puddles and damp areas,” he explained.

A Canal & River Trust spokesperson said: “We’ve been made aware of a small leak into a carpark in Stalybridge which appears to be coming from the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

“Our engineers have visited site and could not find a visible flow.

“We will need to undertake further investigations to identify the source to establish where the leak is coming from.”
