DENTON completed the double-double when their A team matched the B’s feat in retaining their Oldham and District Golf League title.
They did it with a last-green 3-2 win over Saddleworth A in a thrilling contest at North Manchester.
Ironically, both Denton team had winning margins of 13.5 points over their nearest challengers in division A east and division B east respectively.
In the crossover matches with the leading teams in the west division, Denton A defeated Oldham 3-2 in the semi final and Saddleworth 3-2 in the final.
Reece Hobson’s Denton A have now won the league in three of the last four seasons, but they were pushed to the wire by Ben Simpson’s side.
Captain Mark Hart’s Denton B overcame Werneth 4.5-1.5 in the semi final and Castle Hawk 5-0 in the final.
He mentioned Dave Kelly, Gary Owen and Derek Stanley, all newcomers to the B team this season, as playing key roles in their victory.
It is only the third time in the league’s 48-year history that both A and B teams from the same club have retained their league titles – both previously done by Stamford in 1987-88 and again in 1999-2000.
And runners-up represented the best performance in the league by a Saddleworth A team since 2001. It was the fifth time they have finished second, having won the title five times though the last was 28 years ago in 1993.
Denton’s two teams will be bidding for further silverware on Sunday, September 19 when they contest the league’s end-of-season Brian Atack Trophy at Werneth.
- Lady Captain’s Prize, a major at Denton, was won by past lady captain Laraine Gordon.
She returned a nett 70 for a one stroke winning margin over runner-up Pat Southall.
