Belle Vue Colts rising star Sam McGurk targets return at National Speedway Stadium in Manchester

BELLE Vue Colts rising star Sam McGurk is targeting a return to the saddle on July 23, when the Cool Running Colts face Eastbourne at the National Speedway Stadium in Manchester.

The 15-year-old has been side-lined with a hairline fracture to his left femur following a racing incident in the British U-21 semi-final at Mildenhall last month.

After spending several weeks in a full leg cast, he is well on the road to recovery and already planning the next stage of his physiotherapy.

He said: “I didn’t think it was something too serious when it first happened. The track was quite slick and the bike just spun and threw me off, and then it landed on me.

“I thought it was just a dead-leg or muscle damage because I was able to walk off the track, but the next day it hadn’t improved so I went to hospital to put my mind at ease.

“It is a good job I did because otherwise I would never have known. It was disappointing when they told me I wouldn’t be allowed to race but I didn’t have much choice.

“Having the full leg cast on was frustrating but I’m glad to say that is now off and Mark [Lemon] has put me in touch with a specialist in Manchester to help with my physiotherapy.

“I’m hoping to do two to three sessions a week with them to get my strength back up so that I can be back in the team for our next home meeting against Eastbourne on July 23.

“It was hard watching our last home meeting knowing I should be out there with the boys, and as soon as I can walk without my crutches I’ll be getting back on my bike.
