Lockdown children’s podcast project offers chance to win lead role

CHILDREN are invited to get creative to be in with the chance of featuring in an episode of lockdown podcast Armchair Adventures.

Music theatre organisation Made by Mortals, based at the Guide Bridge Theatre in Audenshaw, launched the podcast last November to bring people together through music, theatre and song.

The online adventures tell the story of Connie, whose parents run a travel agents in Ashton. Since lockdown hit, they were unable to book anymore holidays, so Connie and the customers (the Hearts & Minds group) came up with the idea of an ‘Armchair Adventure’ – using just your imagination.

There are four interactive episodes live, which so far have been listened to more than 12,000 times, and another four have been commissioned.

And now a children’s competition will give the winner the opportunity to feature in a future episode.

The competition, based on episode four – Jean’s Artistic Adventure, invites children to draw where they would send Connie and her customers on an Armchair Adventure. It can be anywhere… the beach, a roller coaster, or even the jungle!

The judges are looking for imagination, originality and how children express themselves.

The winner will work closely with professional musicians, an actor and a scriptwriter as well as a podcast engineer to create a new imaginary travel adventure.

Five runners up will have their drawings blown up in large format to be displayed in shopping centres around Greater Manchester.

The Made by Mortals team, and their over-65s theatre group Hearts & Minds, have also run more than 35 school’s workshops and episode launch parties on Zoom, for more than 2,000 in-school learners and home learners.

Paul Hine, director at Made by Mortals with Andy Smith, said: “We have been overwhelmed by how popular the podcast has been and the feedback we’ve had from children and their teachers too has been heart-warming.

“With the theme of episode 4 being drawing and art, we thought it was the perfect chance to get youngsters involved and drawing a picture of their favourite travel adventure or trip out.”

The competition deadline is April 30. For more details and how to enter, go to: www.madebymortals.org/drawing-competition-and-new-episode/
