THIS was supermarket sweep with a difference when two members of the Canal and River Trust received notification of debris by bridge 101 in Stalybridge.
Aiden Lumb and Trevor Wilkinson were already removing flotsam and jetsam from the water when the Correspondent highlighted a number of shopping trollies submerged close to the towpath.
Armed with rakes the pair set about removing them from the water. Reporter Trevor Baxter said: “We initially thought there were two trollies, three at most.
“But it soon became clear more had been wheeled from the nearby Aldi store and dumped.
“Eventually, Aiden and Trevor hauled out eight trollies, several stuck together, onto the towpath.
“Most, if not all, looked as though they could be re-used after a wipe down and clean.
“It was a job well done and potentially saved any barges from damage by a mindless act of vandalism.”
