Town Talk: Thank you Tameside Correspondent

FOLLOWING the recent Totally Locally FiverFest promotion in Ashton Town Centre, I would like to thank The Correspondent for its coverage of the event across social media channels.

I organised the event which is all about persuading people to shop local and the difference that spending just £5 per week with local independents can make to our local economy. Tameside Markets also support this event.

The Correspondent has also featured the first ever Ashton Independent Business Awards which was organised by Ashton Town Team chair Kevin Taylor, was sponsored by Bromleys Solicitors and supported by Ashton Independent Retail and Tameside Markets.

There was a massive response to this event with many businesses being nominated by their customers and members of the public. This will now be an annual event.

Both events help keep a focus on our independent businesses which currently face challenging trading conditions and will do for some time to come.

Constantly looking at how to promote these businesses, it was hoped that perhaps Tameside Council would engage with any plans they may have for Christmas but as they haven’t engaged with any town centre groups that we are aware of, and we have now organised our own Christmas event.

It is called The Twelve Icons of Christmas and will take the form of a family friendly shopping trail which will be a fun, and most important safe experience. The event will start on Saturday, December 5 and again the focus will be to attract footfall for our independent businesses in the run up to Christmas.

Saturday, December 5 is also Small Business Saturday, a national campaign to encourage local shopping with small businesses.

I would like to thank all of you who support our independents, many of them received Government grants which have proved invaluable in helping them through this difficult time.

It is just disappointing that we have a local council that does not appreciate what an asset these businesses are and has, so far as we aware, offered no support for Tameside town centres.
