Please help support Tameside families in need this Christmas

RESIDENTS and businesses are being urged to donate to local food banks and the Tameside Toy Appeal to help local families in need.

Christmas will be very difficult time this year for many families in the borough, particularly those living in poverty.

Residents are being urged to put extra items in their trolleys and baskets when shopping for their essential groceries. They can donate the items in the food bank collection points in local supermarkets.

Items needed include tinned meat and fish, tinned fruit and vegetables, custard and rice pudding, tea bags, coffee, long life milk and fruit juice, microwavable rice, breakfast cereals, biscuits and Christmas treats such as boxes of chocolates.

And, while shopping for Christmas gifts, people are urged to buy an extra gift for a child or young person in need as part of the Tameside Toy Appeal. These can be dropped off at any Tameside children’s centre, Asda in Ashton or any of the other local collection points listed here. Or you can donate money via the JustGiving page which will be used to buy gifts including gift vouchers for teenagers.

There is usually a shortage of gifts for babies and teenage boys so please remember them when shopping and donating. Donation ideas:

Children aged 0 – 3 years – Bath toys, building blocks, playmats, teethers

Children aged 4 – 12 years – Activity toys, board games, dressing up outfits, puzzles

Teenagers – Art supplies, card games, gift vouchers, sports equipment

All ages – Books, gloves, hats, pyjamas, scarves, slippers, socks

Please donate by Friday 11 December 2020. The appeal cannot accept any second hand or soft toys

If you are a family in need or know of one who would benefit from a gift please contact: or Tel: 0161 339 2345.

Tameside Council Executive Leader Cllr Brenda Warrington said: “Every year the generous support of Tameside residents and business donating to foodbanks and the Tameside Toy Appeal brings very much needed festive cheer and support to local families and individuals living in difficult circumstances. This year, people are suffering particular hardship and your support and goodwill is needed more than ever.

“The old adage is true that it feels better to give than to receive and donating to a foodbank or the toy appeal is a great way to get in the festive spirit and help you feel involved and connected with your local community. The toy donations will bring smiles to faces of many children and young people and the food donations will help to fill some empty cupboards in struggling households over the Christmas season. Please give what you can.”
