WHEN Cllr Janet Cooper is installed as the 47th civic mayor of Tameside on Tuesday (May 26) a little piece of history will be created.
It will be the first time the office has changed hands at a virtual event and with no transfer of the chain.
Because of the Covid-19 restrictions, the scheduled annual full council meeting has to take place remotely. There will be no physical attendance and the agenda has been pared back to essential items.
Members of the public can watch a webcast of proceedings at https://tameside.gov.uk/
It is hoped the ceremonial aspects can take place later in the year after lockdown has ended.
Cllr Cooper, who represents Longdendale ward, will be supported by her partner Dennis Fitzpatrick who will be mayor’s consort.
Her chosen charities are Tameside 4 Good, Tameside Young Carers, the Tameside and Glossop Scanner Appeal, and Cascade Baby Bundles which helps families facing hardship.
The new deputy mayor of Tameside is Cllr Mike Glover who represents Ashton Hurst ward.
