SOME OF the most well-known characters took the streets of Dane Bank to spread some cheer through the toughest of times – after a nine-year-old’s brainwave.
Toy Story’s Woody was joined by Sesame Street’s Elmo and Big Bird as well as Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario on the afternoon of April 1 – but this was no April fool.
It was all from the idea of Shay Connolly, who goes to Denton West End Primary School, and wanted to see smiles on people’s faces.
And Dawn Griffin, who was Big Bird for the afternoon stroll, admitted just seeing the characters on the streets had a big effect.
She said: “We’ve had a really good response. We asked people if they could knock on their windows and give us a smile – and we got loads!
“We’d scream and shout, ‘hello’ to people who are self-isolating or kids who wanted to see us. It was great.
“The whole idea was just to spread a bit of positivity around Dane Bank.”
Dawn, who was joined by Shay (Sonic) and mum Barbara Mansley (Mario), Nigel Wood (Woody), also revealed that may not be the last people in Dane Bank have seen of the characters.
“We couldn’t get everywhere,” added the childminder who lives on Granada Road. “So we may do it again and go to areas we didn’t manage to get to.”
Seeing his idea come off and the response it got certainly made Shay’s day.
He said: “I wanted to cheer people up while we’re on lockdown.”
