Second Tameside man charged under new COVID-19 laws

A man from Tameside becomes the second in the country to be charged under new COVID-19 laws.

Hamza Ali, 15/04/1999 of Burlington Street, Ashton-under-Lyne was arrested last night (March 31) for contravening a requirement as to the restriction of movement during an emergency period.

Yesterday GMP officers witnessed a large group congregating on Millennium Green, in Ashton-Under-Lyne.

Officers attempted to speak to them however the group ran away before returning to the same spot a short time later only to be detained by officers who remained at the scene.

Ali refused to comply with Police instruction and was therefore arrested.

He appeared before Stockport Magistrates and was ordered to pay £217 in fines and cost.
