A BLACKOUT affected more than 1,200 homes in Mossley after an electricity cable was severed by accident.
The incident happened on Stamford Road on Friday, January 31 when United Utilities were carrying out work.
Their workmen accidentally cut through an electricity cable causing the power cut to homes and triggering off burglar alarms.
Former Mossley town councillor Greg Brett said: “Traffic in Mossley is said to be chaotic and power cuts have been reported after a workman cut through a live power cable.
“House alarms are believed to be sounding and Stamford Road closed after residents heard a loud bang in the area. Please avoid the area.”
A spokesperson for Electricity North West said: “A power cut, caused by a third party damaging an underground electricity cable, caused the loss of power to 1,212 customers in Mossley on Friday at 1.26pm.
“We responded straightaway and remotely restored power to all customers within five minutes. Our engineers attended site immediately, assessed the damage and completed the necessary repair work over the weekend.”
There had been traffic signals in operation on Stamford Road with one lane closed while United Utilities carried out work
However, the road was shut completely after the incident which caused disruption to motorists.
