Recognition aplenty for DOAC

A CENTRE that gets children from Hyde and Denton on to the water to take up windsurfing or sailing has won a top award.Debdale Outdoor Adventure Club (DOAC) received a highly coveted commendation for the work it does with youngsters in the area.

Now DOAC – which is based at Debdale Park, just over the border from Denton – has been awarded the 2019 NW OnBoard Club Trophy from the Royal Yachting Association.

That makes it officially the best in the North West.

DOAC introduced a whopping 815 young people to either sailing or windsurfing in 2019, as well as winning the T15 Interclub Series.

Debdale also produced the best team attendance at the OnBoard 6 Hour Race in last year’s event at Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club.

Members of DOAC will be at the Royal Yachting Association’s Dinghy Show in London at the end of next month (Feb) after it was awarded with a commendation for its work developing young sailors and windsurfers.

And this latest honour has given them firm reason to believe the centre can become bigger and better in 2020.

Nicola Stockdale, commodore of DOAC, which works in partnership with the 1851 Trust via the Rebels sailing programme, said: “This achievement is thanks to our work developing young sailors and providing them with opportunities and careers, as well as excellent T15 programme and of course all the work we’re doing with the 1851 Trust.

“We already have big plans for the year ahead as to how we can improve even more, but my question is – What would you like to see happening at the club in 2020?

“A massive thank you to all of our instructors, volunteers and members for helping us get to this point and we can’t wait to improve upon our current offer.”
