Wilko opens new store in Ashton

ANOTHER phase in the Vision Tameside project is complete with the new Wilko store opening in the Tameside One complex in Ashton.

Tameside Council executive leader Cllr Brenda Warrington helped lead a ceremonial ribbon-cutting along with Wilko head of retail Craig McGregor, branch manager Sam Kavanagh and Sally Backhouse, a representative of the Alzheimer’s Society attending on behalf of the Wilko Charity Partnership.

Summer-themed goody bags were given to the first 100 customers and there were complimentary cupcakes.

Cllr Warrington said: “I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Wilko back to the market place in Ashton.

“They have one of the most popular stores in the town and I know their new site will be a magnet, attracting lots more shoppers into the area.

“Their store sits alongside the new library, customer services, Citizens Advice Bureau, credit union, welfare rights, college and Job Centre Plus within the Tameside One complex, and will soon overlook an upgraded market and civic square, and be close to the new transport hub which will make Ashton much more accessible by public transport.”

Founded in 1930 as Wilkinson Stores by JK Wilkinson, Wilko is one of the UK’s largest and most popular retailers.
