Denton West on Max power to regain premier division status

DENTON West have turned to former professional Somila Seyibokwe to help them regain their top flight status in the Greater Manchester Cricket League.

With homegrown Max Cole skippering the Windsor Park side and other players returning, there is optimism West’s stay in division 1A will only be a temporary one.

South African Seybokwe spent last year at Heyside CC but is back for a second spell to replace Zimbabwean Blessing Muzarabani.

The Harare born 22-year-old’s stats fell short of expectation but Muzarabani has since signed a three-year Kolpak deal with Northamptonshire.

Hamish Dunlop and England disabilities international Jordan Williams are other former players coming back to revive West’s fortunes.

“We struggled a bit last season but I am sure we are going to be stronger this season, “ says skipper Cole, stepping up from last season’s vice-captains’ role.

“It’s good to see ‘Stitch’ (Seybokwe) back and top two is what we are aiming for. Anything else, like a good cup run, will be a bonus.

“I’m looking forward to captaining the side. I spoke to a few of the lads and they were all happy for me to do it.

“We have a fairly young team anyway,” explained the 23-year-old who, apart from one season with Ribblesdale Wanderers, has played all his cricket at Windsor Park.

“Six or seven of us played junior cricket a Wests so we have grown up together.”

Wests begin their campaign on April 20 (noon start) with a home game against another newly relegated side, Heywood CC. That’s followed by a derby at Denton CC on May 11.

“I would expect Heywood will be one of our rivals this year and Flowery Field look to have a decent side as well,” added Cole.
