Mossley Morris Men step out in search of new dancers and musicians

A MOSSLEY folk dance group with roots stretching back more than 200 years is on the lookout for new members to help keep a proud local tradition alive.

Mossley Morris Men, a North West Clog Morris side, is inviting anyone with an interest in traditional dance or music to come along and give it a try.

A spokesperson for the group said: “The side is an all-male dance side, however we have female musicians and would welcome any interest from potential dancers or musicians. Come along and say hello, you never know you may enjoy it.”

The group’s next practice takes place at The Stamford Arms on Huddersfield Road in Carrbrook on Tuesday, February 3, starting at 8pm. Newcomers are encouraged to drop in, whether they have experience or are simply curious.

Mossley Morris Men has a long and distinguished history. Although the current side was re-established in 1981 by the late Derek Howard, records show Morris dancing in Mossley dating back to the early 19th century.

One of the group’s proudest moments came in 1890, when Mossley dancers performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of an English Folk Dance and Song Society festival.

Over the years, the side has travelled widely, dancing at folk and music festivals and venues across the country, helping to showcase Mossley’s cultural heritage far beyond Tameside.
