DESPITE the cold and wet weather, around 30 people wrapped up warm and turned out for the first ever ‘Walk with a Doc’, marking the launch of a new monthly health and wellbeing initiative.
The inaugural walk took place around Stamford Park, with the planned route adapted to ensure everyone’s safety in the wintry weather.
Participants enjoyed a relaxed, sociable stroll at a leisurely pace, with plenty of conversation along the way.

Before setting off, walkers took part in a short, accessible talk on the health benefits of fibre – a key feature of the programme, which combines gentle physical activity with practical health education.
The scheme was launched this month by Dr Nita Taylor from Grosvenor Medical Centre in Stalybridge, who is leading the monthly walks as a way for people of all ages and abilities to connect, move more and build healthier habits.
Reflecting on the first walk, Dr Taylor told The Correspondent: “The first walk was so exciting. It was lovely to see people chatting and the smiles on their faces despite the terrible weather.
“There were people there of all abilities, and some with health conditions who were unsure about attending. By the end of the walk, there was a clear sense of enjoyment and confidence, with many already looking forward to the next one.
“Many of us lead quite sedentary lives. This is worse for our health than smoking 20 cigarettes a day, which is why physical activity is so important. But that doesn’t mean you need to hit the gym or run a marathon. Just a simple walk has so many health benefits especially if you do it with others. So why not try our next walk.”
‘Walk with a Doc’ will take place every second Sunday of the month, with the next walk scheduled for Sunday, February 8. Those wishing to take part are asked to meet at 10am at the council car park on Darnton Road.
The walks are free to attend, with no pressure or competition. Each session begins with a short health talk, followed by a comfortable group walk of between 2.5 and 5km, making it suitable for beginners and those returning to gentle activity.
