LIBRARIES across Tameside are rolling out a packed programme of events in a bid to get more residents reading for pleasure – and rediscovering their local library.
To mark the 2026 National Year of Reading, libraries will host monthly activities designed to celebrate books, stories and the simple joy of reading.
The free sessions will take place throughout the year in libraries across the borough and are aimed at people of all ages and abilities.
This year’s national theme, ‘Go All In’, encourages readers to follow their interests – whether that’s fiction, non-fiction, poetry, graphic novels or something else entirely. Alongside promoting enjoyment, the campaign also highlights the wider benefits of reading, from boosting vocabulary and creativity to keeping the mind active.
One of the headline events is a special “readathon” at Ashton Library on Tuesday, February 4, held to mark National Read Aloud Day. Running from 10.30am to 4.30pm, the event will see readers take turns sharing stories aloud in a continuous relay.
Local authors and members of readers’ groups will be among those taking part, reading from their own work as well as favourite pieces of literature. Anyone who wants to listen along can drop in during the day or watch via a livestream on the Tameside Libraries Facebook page.
Libraries will also be joining in with National Storytelling Week, running from January 31 to February 8, with after-school storytelling sessions taking place at every Tameside library.
As an added nod to the celebratory year, anyone who joins Tameside Libraries in 2026 will receive a special shiny gold-coloured membership card.
Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, Cllr Leanne Feeley, said: “We are so excited to step into the year of reading. Our libraries have a fantastic programme of activities and sessions designed to inspire residents to read more.
“Reading offers so many benefits, and we’re encouraging everyone across Tameside to get involved. Come along and discover what your local library has to offer!”
Full details of events and sessions are available through local libraries and on Tameside Libraries’ social media channels.
