Eco Streets pilot to transform Ashton alleyway into vibrant community space

A NEW pilot project is set to transform neglected alleyways in Tameside into thriving green spaces led by the local community.

Eco Streets, launched by Tameside Council in partnership with Groundwork Greater Manchester, aims to involve residents directly in the improvement and creative redesign of their neighbourhoods – turning once-forgotten areas into welcoming, eco-friendly spaces.

A new pilot project is set to transform neglected alleyways in Tameside into thriving green spaces led by the local community.

The first pilot site will be the alleyway between Egerton and Raynham Street in Ashton-under-Lyne, where over the next three months, council officers and Groundwork staff will work with residents and Accent Homes tenants to bring the project to life.

Community information days will give residents a chance to share their ideas, view design plans, and get involved in hands-on activities such as planting, waste reduction, maintenance, and recycling workshops. There will also be children’s sessions to help engage younger residents in shaping their neighbourhood.

If the pilot proves successful, Tameside Council hopes to expand the scheme to other areas across the borough.

Councillor Laura Boyle, Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhoods, said:

“We are extremely excited to launch the pilot scheme of Eco Streets for Tameside. It’s an excellent way to involve residents in the development and improvement of their neighbourhoods.

The project helps foster a sense of community and pride in where they live, while bettering our towns. By collaborating with local residents and Groundwork Greater Manchester, we aim to transform underused alleyways into vibrant, welcoming spaces that people can use and enjoy.”

Groundwork Greater Manchester, which has successfully delivered Eco Streets projects across Manchester, brings expertise in community engagement and sustainable design to help ensure the initiative thrives in Tameside.
