Appeal after graves vandalised at Stalybridge church

A COMMUNITY has been left shocked and saddened after more than 20 graves were vandalised at St George’s Church in Stalybridge.

The damage, which affected around 25 gravestones on Church Walk, was discovered earlier this week, prompting the church to appeal for witnesses and information.

In a statement shared on social media, the church described the incident as “a very sad post”, saying:

“Our churchyard has been vandalised, affecting 25 of the gravestones.

The police have been notified, and we have a crime number. Unfortunately, they are not able to do anything without further information. So we are asking if anyone saw anything or has doorbell footage of what happened.”

The vandalism is believed to have taken place between Monday evening, October 27, and Thursday morning, October 30.

The churchyard, which is a place of reflection and remembrance for many local families, has been an important part of the Stalybridge community for generations. News of the damage has prompted an outpouring of sympathy and anger from residents online, with many expressing their disappointment that such a sacred place has been targeted.

Police have been informed and anyone with information, CCTV, or doorbell footage covering the area around St George’s Church during the dates in question is urged to come forward.
