Community groups in Tameside unite to champion Cancer awareness

TAMESIDE community groups recently gathered to celebrate their collective achievements at a special event aimed at raising awareness about cancer symptoms and encouraging early medical intervention.

The ‘Talk Cancer’ celebration, organised by Tameside Council, took place on Thursday, May 1 at the 4C Community Centre in Ashton-under-Lyne and spotlighted the efforts of seven diverse community groups.

Supported by nearly £20,000 in funding from the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, they initiated a range of impactful projects, including art initiatives, local events and promotions at football venues across the area.

The funding seeks not only to educate the community about cancer symptoms and screening programs but also to address emotional and psychological barriers that hinder people from seeking medical assistance, thereby promoting health equity and ensuring timely referrals.

The event drew attendees from various sectors, including cancer care professionals, community group members and local residents.

It served as a platform to showcase the innovative projects undertaken, share information about cancer and screening and strengthen the relationship between community organisations and Tameside Council.

Cllr Tafheen Sharif, Tameside Council’s executive member for population health and wellbeing, said:

“Cancer affects so many lives, and raising awareness can truly save them.

“I’m incredibly proud of the dedication our community groups have shown in breaking down barriers and spreading vital knowledge about early symptoms and screening.

“Their work is not only inspiring – it’s lifesaving.

“Hosting this event is a powerful reminder that by working together, we can create a healthier, more informed community where everyone feels empowered to take charge of their health and seek help early.”

Anyone with potential cancer symptoms should make an appointment with their GP as soon as possible.
