A STALYBRIDGE man has been given the ultimate honour by the golf club he has served for 50 years – a life membership.
Peter Hankey, who lives in Carrbrook, joined Stamford in 1974 and has been more than just a player.
He served on the club council as greens chairman, even stepping in to assist with clubhouse duties when needed.

His leadership and dedication were recognised when he was named club captain in 1988 and in 2002 was appointed club president.
Now he has had an honorary life membership bestowed upon him.
“I don’t have a single proud moment other than the simple decision to join this club,” said modest Peter, who maintained a handicap of nine and secured three major titles.
“I have too many memories that I will cherish forever, not forgetting the lifelong friends I’ve made along the way.
“This recognition means so much. I feel very proud and humbled.”
Mark Smith, professional at Stamford Golf Club, on Huddersfield Road, added: “Stamford has proudly recognised the remarkable dedication and lifelong commitment of long-standing member Peter Hankey, awarding him the prestigious title of honorary life member.
“With this well-deserved honorary life membership, his legacy at Stamford Golf Club is cemented for generations to come.
“His passion, service, and dedication truly embody the spirit of the club.”
