Plea to keep Mossley Fairtrade

AN APPEAL has been made to make sure Mossley can remain a Fairtrade town.

For several years, a steering group has made sure the area has had the status, it is feted on the border signs.

Work has gone on for more than a decade to make sure the movement, which pledges backing for smallholder farmers and workers that produce everyday foods and goods, has been supported.

Now it needs new members to help keep up its impressive efforts – and possibly take them further.

Janet Davies, of Fairtrade Mossley, said: “Do you have a passion for fairness and justice? Are you a social media whizz?

“Fairtrade Mossley aims to work with schools, business, retail and catering outlets, community and faith groups.

“If you have a connection to any of these groups, will you join us as a Fairtrade ambassador promoting Fairtrade where you are.”

Fairtrade Mossley has often backed Fairtrade fortnight and Janet revealed the importance of the movement.

She added: “We stand up for the people who grow our food, mine our gold and produce the cotton in our clothes – people who are often exploited, underpaid and facing the greatest threat from the climate crisis.

“Smallholder farmers, who have contributed the least to climate change, manage over 80 per cent of the world’s 500 million farms and rely on this land for their livelihoods.

“However, these farmers often lack access to the resources they need to adapt to a changing climate.

“When we choose Fairtrade, farmers receive a fair price and also the Fairtrade Premium. This is an additional sum of money which goes into a communal fund for workers and farmers to use – as they see fit – to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions.”
