Development in Mossley ‘can revitalise area’

A ‘HEAVILY overgrown and unkempt’ area of Mossley will be turned into a reconfigured 25-house development after Tameside Council granted planning permission.

Building on the site of the former Prospect House on Stockport Road had already been given but a new design went before its Speakers Panel (Planning) committee.

That includes four plots being reorientated and a cycle store relocated. One was redesigned with a corner bay window to offer an ‘entrance feature’ to the site and a new boundary wall with wrought iron railings positioned above between brick piers was put forward.

Following talks with officers, it was also decided to reduce the height of some houses by two metres so they did not overshadow nearby Beechwood Drive.

A statement, which described the area as being heavily overgrown and unkempt, said: “In terms of the general character of the built form in this part of Mossley, there is no sense of cohesion or consistency in house types or styles.

“However, a townhouse-type design is typical within the Mossley area. This includes those properties at the scheme on Three Counties Road and Mossley has historically been characterised by taller mill-type buildings.”

The Speakers Panel (Planning) committee approved the redrawn application at its meeting on Wednesday, January 19.
