STYLISH RIOT COLUMN: Come the New Revolution

The Correspondent’s monthly delve into the local music scene. Brought to you by Sam Gosling.

NEW Revolution, one of Tameside’s most talked about young bands are releasing their long-awaited debut single.

The Stylish Riot-managed four-piece have been making waves on the local scene in recent months and the next few months are set to be their biggest yet.

Crafted by teenagers amid a pandemic and social turmoil at Boxyard Studios in Manchester’s Cheetham Hill, Stay at Home Pessimist is a catchy but fiercely unapologetic representation of the loss of hope faced by younger generations in the modern day world.

Backed by guitar riffs ranging from mellow to abrasive and heavy yet grounded basslines and drumbeats, the lyrics concern an array of struggles faced by the young people of today – varying from pessimism and cynicism, to losing all hope or faith, to being a victim of prejudice.

Correspondent readers will be familiar with New Revolution after this paper featured them several months ago.

And as lead guitarist Zak Hadfield, who lives in Hyde, explained, seeing what goes on around him has had an impact.

He said: “It has to some extent. A lot of the songs are about how I feel about things that are going on.

“There’s a lot of stuff about how it is to be from Greater Manchester and being working class.

“We formed when we were really young, in year seven at Hyde High School.

“We started off playing Nirvana covers and just kept going, started writing sounds and got better.

“Now we have a blend of various elements of different genres of alternative rock. Things like grunge, indie, punk.

“Who we sound like depends on the song. There’s a lot of Nirvana and Foo Fighters stuff but there’s also stuff that leans more towards someone like the Arctic Monkeys.”

The single is set to be released on all major streaming platforms on Friday, January 28, followed by a celebratory free entry headline show at Zeros Bar in Stalybridge on Saturday, January 29 with support from The Seminals.

The band are also set to open for fellow Tameside outfit Narrow Margin, who hail from Hyde, at a massive show at Gorilla in Manchester on Saturday, February 12.
