Tameside trio discover FA Trophy first round opponents

THREE Tameside football clubs have discovered who stands between them and a place in the next round of the Isuzu FA Trophy.

Ashton United, Curzon Ashton and Hyde United have all been handed First Round Proper ties, with the matches set to take place on Saturday, October 24.

Ashton United will have home advantage for a tough test when they welcome Redcar Athletic to Hurst Cross.

The Robins are currently 13th in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, while their North Yorkshire opponents sit third in the table.

Ashton booked their place in the First Round Proper in dramatic fashion, beating Warrington Town 5-3 on penalties after the sides drew 2-2 in the third qualifying round.

The Robins will host Redcar Athletic at Hurst Cross.

Curzon Ashton face a trip to North Yorkshire to take on Bridlington Town.

The Seasiders, who play in the Northern Premier League Division One East, reached this stage of the competition for the first time in 22 years after beating local rivals Whitby Town 3-0 last weekend.

Curzon will head into the tie as the higher-ranked side, with the Nash currently seventh in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Adam Barton’s side secured their place in the First Round Proper with a 3-1 victory over Tameside rivals Stalybridge Celtic at the Tameside Stadium.

Hyde United face a short journey to Oldham to take on Avro, for what will be a difficult assignment.

The Tigers, who currently sit 14th in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, will travel to a side among the early pacesetters in the division.

Avro are second in the table, just one point behind leaders Cleethorpes Town and with a game in hand. They have won seven of their opening nine league matches.

Hyde reached the First Round Proper after a 2-0 victory over FC United of Manchester at the Project Solar Stadium last weekend.

The Tigers will be looking to roar into the Second Round Proper of the FA Trophy.

The First Round Proper is the first of seven rounds standing between the remaining clubs and the FA Trophy final at Wembley, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 16.

There are 32 ties in this round, with matches decided on the day. If the scores are level after 90 minutes, the winner will be decided by penalties.

The winners of each tie will receive £3,000, while the losing clubs will collect £775.

The FA Trophy – won by Southend United last season – is the premier knockout competition for clubs playing in steps one to four of the National League System.
