Tameside residents urged to check electoral register ahead of 2027 elections

TAMESIDE residents are being urged to check their electoral registration details to make sure they do not lose their chance to vote in future elections.

The council is carrying out its 2026 annual canvass, the process used by local authorities to check that information held on the electoral register remains accurate and identify people who may need to register.

It comes ahead of the next round of local elections in Tameside in May 2027.

Residents who receive correspondence as part of the canvass are being asked to read it carefully and follow any instructions provided.

Tameside Council Electoral Registration Officer Emma Alexander said: “The annual canvass is our way of making sure that the information on the electoral register for every address is accurate and up to date.

“To make sure you don’t lose your say at upcoming elections, simply follow the instructions we have sent to you.

“If you’re not currently registered, your name will not appear in the messages we send. If you want to register, the easiest way is online.”

People who have recently moved home are particularly being encouraged to make sure their details are correct. Registering for council tax does not automatically register someone to vote, while those who change address need to register at their new home.

The Electoral Commission says the annual canvass is carried out across Great Britain each year to confirm existing entries and identify people who have moved or are not currently registered.

Residents who are not registered can apply online through the Government’s voter registration service.

Anyone who wants to check whether they are already registered should contact Tameside Council’s Electoral Services team, as there is no national online electoral register where individuals can check their status.

Questions about registration can also be directed to the council’s elections team at elections@tameside.gov.uk.
