Tameside & Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust has been recognised for a number of innovative approaches to improving patient safety at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2026.
The Trust has been shortlisted across four different categories at this year’s awards, which celebrate the critical work being done to address the complexities of delivering safe care amidst times of significant change and long-standing pressures.
An ambitious initiative which successfully increased the number of premature babies to receive colostrum (early breast milk) within 48 hours of birth was shortlisted for the ‘Maternity, Midwifery and Neonatal Safety Initiative of the Year’ award.
The Trust’s Community Quality Improvement Essentials education and development programme, which has embedded a proactive safety-first culture within the Trust’s Community Services, was shortlisted in this year’s ‘Patient Safety Education and Training Award’ category.

Meanwhile, the Patient Transfer Service, a team of 10 who support safe and timely patient movement across the hospital, community services and social care, were shortlisted for ‘Patient Safety Team of the Year’.
Finally, up for ‘Urgent and Emergency Care Safety Initiative of the Year’ is an innovative project which uses artificial intelligence to predict which patients are at high risk of reattending the emergency department within the next month, allowing healthcare staff to intervene sooner before their condition escalates.
The shortlisted entries were selected following a rigorous judging process and were recognised as standout examples of patient safety which extends beyond clinical excellence – the awards are about fostering a culture of openness, learning, and collaboration while harnessing the power of technology to create safer, more resilient systems.
Now in their 16th year, the HSJ Patient Safety Awards continue to shine a light on outstanding individuals and teams who are improving patient safety across health and care. As the system undergoes major change – from national restructuring to localised transformation across ICBs, trusts and primary care to deliver the three shifts of the 10 Year Plan – these awards matter more than ever.
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 28 September 2026 at The Telford International Centre. The event shines a light on outstanding teams who are improving patient safety across health and care.
Trust Chief Executive Karen James OBE said “Being shortlisted across four categories in this year’s HSJ Patient Safety Awards is a testament to our teams’ ambition, creativity and commitment to keeping patients safe.
“Each of these projects shows how innovation and teamwork can make a real difference to our patients. I’m incredibly proud of our colleagues and the impact their work is having across our organisation and our community.”
