WHAT DO you get the owner of a card shop to celebrate reaching a rather large milestone?
And even though John’s has long been a familiar fixture for locals searching for birthday wishes, gifts and tokens for life’s biggest moments, it has not been owned by a John for more than two decades.
But the story behind Barry Kinder manning the shop on Melbourne Street in Stalybridge is a testament to friendship.

“John was a good friend of mine, I’ve known him since we were…” he said, lowering his hand to desk height to show just how young they were when they first met.
“He got the chance to move in here, which he did, and within a few years he died of leukaemia.
“So I took the shop over, kept the name the same and I’ve had this over 20 years now.
“He would be proud. We’d known each other since we were little and I think he would be proud it’s still going.
“His name is still up there, which is good really. It’s just in memory of him that it keeps going.”

Before opening the shop, John worked at Stalybridge Market when it was still outdoors, along with Mossley and Stockport.
And over the years, Barry has watched the town change around him.
He added: “There’s been a lot of changes in that time and I think from memory of this shop, when I moved in everybody else has changed and not the same as what they were.”
And for Barry, the rhythm of shop life is simple.
He told The Correspondent: “At the moment, just plodding along from day to day to see what happens.”
Between customers, he keeps busy topping up the cards and tackling Sudoku to pass the quieter moments.
On Sunday, May 24, Barry celebrates his 80th birthday with close friends and family over a buffet and drinks.
A milestone marked not just by loved ones, but by the community he has served.
As we spoke, one regular customer walked into the shop with a party popper poised in her hand. It cracked across the room.
“Happy Birthday Barry!”
She handed him two neatly wrapped blue presents and a card.
Lisa, one of Barry’s regular customers, says John’s Cards has become more than a shop.
“He’s always waiting in the shop to help people. A lovely guy – although I think he’s ready to retire now!” she laughed.
“Everyone knows him. You get people passing all the time and sticking their heads in to ask about his day.
“Some people still call him John because they think he’s called John because of John’s Cards.
“He just lets people call him John or Barry. It’s a little community here and he’s part of it, he’s the figurehead.”
Johns Cards is open six days a week from 8.45am until 5.15pm, Barry is there each morning making sure the shop is ready for customers as early as 6am.
And after more than 20 years keeping both the business and his friend’s memory alive, Barry hopes people simply remember one thing:
He continued: “Support your local shops where possible, that’s the main thing.”
“Just notify people that we are here and have been here for over 20 years. It’s been successful, it’s still going after 20 years, that’s the main thing.”
As for turning 80?
“Time has gone quickly. You’ve got to take every day at a time and enjoy every day in life, because you never know what’s going to happen, do you?
“Just take each day as it comes and make the most of every day.”
