Free books and cartoon capers as World Book Day comes to Tameside libraries

CHILDREN across the borough will be able to pick up a free book and join in a cartoon-themed party as Tameside marks World Book Day this week.

All Tameside Libraries branches will be giving away World Book Day titles on Thursday, March 5, with youngsters invited to choose their own book from a wide selection.

World Book Day tokens distributed through schools and libraries can be used, but they are not required to receive a free title.

Tokens are valid up until March 15, 2026. There is a limit of one book per child, with copies available while stocks last.

As well as the giveaway, Ashton Library will host a special World Book Day Party from 4pm to 5.30pm on the day.

Children can collect their free book, take part in a live draw-along session with cartoonist Marc Jackson, and enjoy themed activities celebrating reading and creativity.

The event is free and there is no need to book, although places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Young readers are being encouraged to come along in fancy dress.

Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, Cllr Leanne Feeley, said: “It’s great to see we have such exciting celebrations for this year’s World Book Day, especially in the National Year of Reading. We really encourage reading for pleasure and these kinds of activities really help children discover and enjoy books. So do come on over!”
