Triple honour for long-serving Ashton club volunteers

THREE long-standing volunteers from a local conservative club have been recognised with a prestigious accolade.

Waterloo and Taunton Conservative Club is celebrating the awards that chairman Leon Tamcken, treasurer Brian Higgins and president William Garside have received.

The trio have been given the Badge of Honour Award from the Association of Conservative Clubs Ltd for their dedication and decades of service to the Ashton-under-Lyne club and its members.

William, Leon and Brian have served on the committee for nearly 40 years combined

Between them, they have clocked up nearly 40 years on the committee and their leadership has seen the Oldham Road venue thrive as a social hub.

The three recipients were praised not just for their commitment to the club itself, but for ensuring it remains at the heart of the community – from charity events to social gatherings.

The club scooped Charity Club of the Year for 2023 at the national Club Mirror Awards, as a reflection of its fundraising efforts for both local and national causes.

The trio have also helped the club receive further recognition – including winning the Sir Marcus Fox Club of the Year Award in 2016, being shortlisted for Tameside Business Community Impact Award in 2023 and being nominated for the BBC’s Make a Difference Community Award in 2024.

Club secretary Lyndon Watkin, who presented Leon, Brian and William with their awards, said: “On behalf of the members and committee, I thank them for their dedication and for the countless hours they each give up every week to support the club.”
