A TAMESIDE cricket club has taken a step into a new world with its first ever ladies’ playing group.
Micklehurst may be 135-years-old but the Castle Lane side has finally embraced the growing side of the sport.
And after its first ever soft ball practice session attracted 16 people, hopes are high it will really take off.

The idea is that of Micklehurst CC committee member Tracey Bingley, who along with lifelong member Fay Devlin-Keen played at nearby Saddleworth CC’s women’s side for two years.
The committee decided that this year was the perfect time to put then club on the map for ladies’ cricket, leading to the planning of these sessions.
And the overwhelming response to the Facebook advert – and the success of the session coached by Jonny Forrester and James Alcock – left Tracey bowled over.
Tracey said: “This is a dream come true for me!
“I have watched the game at Micklehurst Cricket Club since I was a baby as my brother played and our family attended the games, both home and away.
“I was never really encouraged to play as it was considered a ‘man’s game’. This wasn’t just the view of our club, this was the general view of the time.
“Instead, I grew up making teas, working behind the bar, and even painting the wicket!
“Now the plan is to focus on learning and training this season, with a few friendly matches along the way.
“If all goes well, it would be amazing to form a team and join the Greater Manchester Cricket League’s Ladies Soft Ball League next year.”
Micklehurst Cricket Club warmly welcomes any ladies interested in giving cricket a try.
Training sessions will be held every Friday during the summer season for girls and ladies aged 14 to 114. No experience is needed.
