‘Funny and moving’ 1960s play at Tameside theatre

A PLAY at a Tameside theatre will tell the story of four young girls at a mother and baby convent in the 1960s.

‘Be My Baby’ will soon be enacted on the Guide Bridge Theatre stage.

Audiences can expect a show, by Amanda Whittington, that is “funny and moving with dark
themes uplifted by a 1960s girl pop soundtrack”.

Set in a church-run mother and baby home in 1964 in the North of England, the story follows the
fortunes of 19-year-old Mary Adams, who is seven months pregnant.

Forcibly sent away by her mother, Mary has to cope with the shame of an unmarried pregnancy
and the realisation she will have to give up the baby for adoption.

Despite this and an overbearing matron, Mary meets new friends – three very different girls in
Queenie, Norma and Dolores.

As the girls have to work to earn their keep, their courage shines through as they sing along to
their favourite girl-group songs of the period.

Directed by Quina Chapman, ‘Be My Baby’ will be at the Audenshaw Road theatre from Monday, March 10, to Saturday, March 15.

Performances start at 7.30pm each night and there will also be a 2pm Saturday matinee.

Tickets are £11 each or £9.90 for Guide Bridge Theatre members. They can be booked online
